Rauw Alejandro

In the year 2017 Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee released Despacito and it topped the charts for most streamed songs during the course of the space of six months. It was a mixture of pop music and reggaeton did not just bring interest in reggaeton but also brought attention to Latin music more generally. Billboard's Top 100 included four mostly Spanish songs in 2016, compared with two for 2015. During the height of Despacito's popularity in 2017 however 19 predominantly Spanish songs made it into the Top 100 In 2020, there were 41 such songs. Following Justin Bieber's bilingual remix to Despacito (2017) well-known artists began to collaborate with reggaeton artists, including Drake with Bad Bunny on MIA (2018) as well as Madonna together with Maluma on Medellin (2019). By 2020 a few reggaeton stars were complaining about its inclination towards mainstream. However, a younger generation namely Rauw Alejandro, sought to continue the evolution of reggaeton. The incorporation of elements from electronic dance music and different styles was an accepted procedure.
